FFRF on the Road
FFRF Associate Counsel Liz Cavell, second from right, attended the “When Rights and Religions Collide” conference in New York City on Oct. 19.
Also pictured, from left: Sarah Haider, executive director of Ex-Muslims of North America; Malkie Schwartz, founder of Footsteps, the first organization in North America to assist people leaving the ultra-orthodox Jewish community; Liz Cavell; and Torah Bontrager, founder of the Amish Heritage Foundation, which assists the Amish who wish to leave their religion.
The conference aimed to address the tension between the protection of religious freedom and the rights of individual persons. It was produced by the “Rights and Religions Forum,” a nonprofit co-founded by Haider, Schwartz and Bontrager.
FFRF Legal Director Rebecca Markert, conference organizer Mandisa Thomas, and FFRF Co-Presidents Annie Laurie Gaylor and Dan Barker pose in front of the Women of Color Beyond Belief conference logo backdrop.
Staffing FFRF’s table at the Women of Color Beyond Belief event: Jasmine Lopez, Rebecca Markert, Annie Laurie Gaylor, Josiane Martinez and Alec Loftus (plus Dan Barker, behind the camera).
The Women of Color Beyond Belief conference, which took place in early October in Chicago, included organizers Sikivu Hutchinson, author and activist with Black Skeptics Los Angeles; Liz Moss, also with BSLA; and Mandisa Thomas, president and founder of Black Nonbelievers. Not pictured is Bridgett “Bria” Crutchfield, who, with Mandisa and Sikivu, was a major organizer.
The WOCBB conference was the first secular forum focused exclusively on the perspectives and work of women of color who are atheists, agnostics, humanists, freethinkers and skeptics.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation was proudly the largest financial co-sponsor of the two-and-a-half-day event, which included a diversity of topics and breakout sessions covering issues such as secular parenting, reproductive rights and secular organizing. Stay tuned for information on 2020’s follow-up conference!
