Also pictured, from left: Sarah Haider, executive director of Ex-Muslims of North America; Malkie Schwartz, founder of Footsteps, the first organization in North America to assist people leaving the ultra-orthodox Jewish community; Liz Cavell; and Torah Bontrager, founder of the Amish Heritage Foundation, which assists the Amish who wish to leave their religion. The conference aimed to address the tension between the protection of religious freedom and the rights of individual persons. It was produced by the “Rights and Religions Forum,” a nonprofit co-founded by Haider, Schwartz and Bontrager. The WOCBB conference was the first secular forum focused exclusively on the perspectives and work of women of color who are atheists, agnostics, humanists, freethinkers and skeptics. The Freedom From Religion Foundation was proudly the largest financial co-sponsor of the two-and-a-half-day event, which included a diversity of topics and breakout sessions covering issues such as secular parenting, reproductive rights and secular organizing.
